Perth, Western Australia-based neXadyne has launched what it says are the world’s first accredited training courses for document control. The company, experienced in the mining and oil and gas sectors, has developed its courses in collaboration with leading Australian companies, and the qualifications have been accredited by the Training Accreditation Council Western Australia.
neXadyne’s Deborah Wilson stresses the qualifications are focused on document control rather than records management, and are not affiliated with any software or vendor (Melbourne-based SaaS collaboration vendor Aconex launched its own courses last year – post). She continues:
“To date there has never been a qualification for Document Controllers that has been accredited by a government body. Our courses address this issue and set benchmarks by which companies can use to gauge relevant experience of potential and existing Document Control employees.
“Western Australia is currently experiencing a boom in the Mining and Resource sector. As such, industry demand for qualified Document Controllers is at an all-time high. With companies investing billions of dollars in new projects, there has never been a better time than now to ensure that project documentation is being correctly handled by trained and qualified staff.”

Paul, this is another sign that the industry is starting to recognise Document Control as a profession, with the professional development needs and opportunities that that implies.
Online project collaboration transforms how projects are delivered, and our Document Control Essentials (DCE) business has run courses on best practice since 2010 so that Doc Controllers can play their part in that. The skills taught are independent of the Aconex platform, although Aconex is used for some hands-on sessions and the content draws on our experience of over 12,000 projects.
DCE have run 31 courses so far, in almost a dozen countries. Incidentally, the first accredited course will run next month in Sydney, and it’s one of seven accredited 3-day courses planned for 2012.

The response we have received regarding these accredited Document Control courses has been fantastic – not only in Australia but world wide.
One of the main comments is that the courses are not affiliated with any software and that they will actually train people to be Document Controllers or expand their current Document Controller knowledge, no courses exist that provide this level of training.
There also seems to be an overall agreement that Document Control cannot be taught in a few days. There is so much information that Document Controllers need to be aware of and shown. We will be providing all of this information in our 3 courses.

I am very interested in attending any Document Control courses as, in my role in the Mining industry, I held a Project Assistant / Document Control position. An EPCM Contractor used the iPAS Document Management System which initially gave me the skill set to increase my knowledge in document control.
To date, no system within my company has been set up mainly due to the downturn in the price of gold these days. Their #1 option being Aconex. I have a burning desire to attend any certified courses in Document Control to further my skill set and gain recognition for what I have been using … that of Excel spreadsheets to record incoming and outgoing documentation and drawings.
In this day and age, not the most professional way of moving forward.
I am based on the Central Coast (1hr north of Sydney) and have been the Document Controller for my workplace for 5 years.
During this time I have had a total of four hours training as no one really knew what to show me.
I have learnt the rest on my own.
I would love to do this course online, and it can’t happen soon enough!
I am from South Africa. I have been working as a document controller for almost 7 years. As I am not a permanent employee, I am forced to find a new job every 2-3 years depending on the duration of the project. I have not yet found a place in South Africa that gives you document control courses and a certificate. I do however see that the requirements for many of the vacancies is a degree of some kind? I am struggling to apply for Snr positions as the amount of hands on experience does not count anymore.

It is noticeable that many of the enquiries for Document Control Courses are from women. In 2010 a gentleman made the salient comment that this was a job usually dumped on a secretary – so right – I had 15 minutes of training and was left to get on with it. It is not a job for the lazy or careless, attention to detail and understanding of what you are doing is paramount,
Unfortunately in construction a document controller’s job only lasts as long as the project, so sadly companies are not investing in in-depth training.
The only UK course I can find is for company employees (and is distance learning) – mainly in the oil and gas sector. I have been looking for a suitable course for some years now without success.
I would be interested in the details of this course.I am currently a document controller but i am looking forward for this type course which will give me a lot more insight to what is expected in other areas.
