At this week’s Autodesk University in London, NBS – Newcastle, UK-based developer of the free BIM digital Toolkit (post) – has launched the public Beta version of the NBS Online Viewer (powered by Autodesk Forge, a WebGL-based viewer). According to BIMplus, the NBS Online Viewer makes it quick and easy for everyone working on a project …

A first look at EADOC

I recently did a GoToMeeting session with Eric Law of EADOC to get a clearer understanding of this US-based Software-as-a-Service construction collaboration platform. The system is mainly aimed at construction project teams operating in north America, and has been around since early 2006 (I first wrote about the business in late 2007). It was developed, …

Five SaaS myths debunked?

At ITPro, Nicole Kobie writes about Gartner’s warnings to businesses about Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The IT analysts say firms need to take a good look at the delivery model before jumping aboard the bandwagon, despite the apparent attractions of the model during a recession (Gartner’s views also covered by Brian Tinham at Manufacturing Computer Solutions). Myth …

Latest viewers

I’ve noticed a couple of press announcements about new file viewers recently. Nemetschek has released a universal viewing tool for IFCs (industry foundation classes), extending the firm’s support for IFCs (see Nemetschek news release). Informative Graphics Corporation (IGC) has announced the latest release of its MYRIAD 3D/2D CAD viewer.

He writes: “Over the past several years, I have not seen a whole lot of electronic redlining going on,” before explaining: “The older generation of architects and engineers can be indifferent, hesitant or intimidated by the whole …

Brava! woes at 4Projects?

Industry sources tell me that UK construction collaboration vendor 4Projects has been having major problems with its third-party drawing viewer application (Brava! from Informative Graphics). I have been emailed several bulletins from 4Projects’ status ticker, spread over a three-day period up to and including this morning: Updated 29/03/2007 10:02:30 – We are still experiencing problems with …

CAD file viewers

I’d almost forgetten Whip! Most vendors of construction collaboration technologies (sometimes called ‘extranets’) will recommend third-party applications to use with their collaboration solutions in order to view, mark-up and comment upon CAD files. Among the pure collaboration vendors, only my employer, BIW Technologies, offers its own integrated file viewing technology, but I sometimes forget about the solutions …
