When I worked (late 1990s) as a consultant for the Greenwich Enterprise Board, I sometimes referred to online guides for small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) on various marketing and web-related matters. This morning I found Business Link pages ‘What is an extranet?’, ‘Benefits of an extranet’ and ‘Planning for an extranet’. Pretty simplistic stuff, …

Any niche AEC search engines?
A Financial Times article describes how, while Google, Yahoo and others try to dominate mass-market search, smaller competitors are targeting niches that the big boys are ignoring. It gives two examples: Convera’s Excalibur is a white-label vertical search product aimed initially at media and publishing, health and life sciences and financial services; and Healthline, a …

What is ‘real-time’ collaboration?
Browsing AEC Cafe‘s AEC Weekly, I was intrigued by an announcement (also reported by Yahoo here) that Canadian software company CMiC was "taking real-time collaboration to the next level with the introduction of CMiC IO, a revolutionary technology that enables businesses to collaborate both internally and with outside partners …". Wow! I thought – my …

Honour for Graphisoft
The BIW Technologies office building in Woking also houses the UK office for Graphisoft, and last month we had a social event to ‘meet the neighbours’ (who also include a law firm, Mackrell Taylor Garrett). Given our shared interests in software and the construction industry, there were clearly lots of common interests between us and …

Making collaboration work
Catching up on my web-browsing over the weekend, I came across an August 2005 Cadalyst article by Michael Dakan describing lessons learned on implementing collaboration systems on US projects. Some key points: Many of the problems are not technology issues at all, but rather basic people issues and human relations management problems. For … collaboration …

Busy at Bricsnet
No fewer than three major announcements from Bricsnet last Thursday: Bricsnet Announces New CEO and Management Bricsnet Launches Next Generation Real Estate Lifecycle Management Solution and Bricsnet Announces $10 Million in New Funding. I wonder why they made three apparently significant announcements on the same day? Were they perhaps trying to get a big a …

Autodesk DWG TrueView
AECnews gives news of a new free, downloadable DWG/DXF viewer from Autodesk. Users may well baulk at a 100MB download and then find it difficult to use – according to Randall Newton, in Autodesk’s features comparison table, “Easy to use interface” is not checked for DWG TrueView! Honesty or an oversight?

Internet ‘fundamentally changing’ UK businesses
According to Silicon.com, the web is transforming traditional business practices as UK firms increasingly use technology to communicate and transact online with customers and suppliers. The e-Value Matters report, from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and sponsored by the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI), says it is the "end of the beginning" of …

NCCTP Conference, 15 November
Since 2000, Emap’s construction publications group, with marketing director Ross Sturley at the forefront, was an active promotor of extranet technologies in the UK construction market, particularly through its various conferences. Now that the NCCTP has begun to mature, it has started to promote its own events. The first NCCTP Conference will be held in …

Designers want CAD plus process support
Just found an AEC Weekly article from 26 September 2005 giving the results of a major European industry study “New Business Potentials for Architects and Engineers” completed for Nemetschek and described as "a thorough investigation of what potential and challenges lie ahead for architects and engineers in Europe and the UK". When it came to …
