Factors in buying software

In “Why Do You Buy CAD Software? Survey Result (preliminary)“, Roopinder Tara of the CAD Insider blog (and the useful TenLinksDaily newsletter) gives an early indication of the key factors used in assessing CAD software for purchase – based on an online survey (still ongoing at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=891102592287). After over 120 responses, the key factors (listed in …

Extranet Evolution – a year old

Looking back at what I was doing 12 months ago, I have just realised that this blog is now been in existence for over a year (my first post was on 15 September 2005). In the first full month (October 2005), according to my StatCounter.com stats, there were a very modest 317 page-loads by 155 unique visitors. Since then numbers have …

Podcasts

By coincidence, I found two bloggers doing their first podcasts on Friday. QSNews editor Phil Clark has done one on that most basic form of communication: speaking (click here), and SaaS pundit Philip Wainewright’s first podcast, Why Business is driving SaaS adoption, is here.

Tagging for Live Writer

Many thanks to Jimmy Bergmark for alerting me to a plug-in that overcomes the tagging gap in Microsoft Live Writer (see comments on  yesterday’s post). It makes Live Writer even more attractive.

Windows Live Writer – first impressions

Earlier this week (see post) I downloaded Windows Live Writer. I tried it out yesterday and the first experience was very good. Having occasionally lost a draft article during preparation of long posts, I like the ‘save draft’ feature, the spell-check is a useful extra, and the big editing area is a big plus for …

Windows Live Writer – beta version launched

I have been a bit sceptical about Microsoft’s ability to adapt to the Web 2.0 world, but the blogosphere reaction to its new Live Writer announcement has been very positive (see, for example, Phil Wainewright’s view). In a nutshell (and to re-use Wainewright’s original wish-list), it is: a simple utility that you can use as …

Autodesk Buzzsaw 7 released

One of Autodesk’s DWF bloggers (there don’t appear to be any official Buzzsaw bloggers), Scott Sheppard (Beyond the Paper) says Autodesk has released a Buzzsaw version 7 update. Mainly administration improvements by the look of things, plus an updated user interface.

ASP, SaaS, On-demand or the “business web”?

At ASPstreet, an article – What do you call your ASP? – by Minda Zetlin usefully sums up some of the debate about terminology, and proposes a term that we may hear more of in the months ahead. Zetlin points out that the term ‘ASP’ became discredited in some people’s eyes by its much-hyped associations …
