e-Pin overhauls website

Keeping my eye on the competition, I looked at UK collaboration vendor ePIN’s website today, noticing that it too has recently undergone an overhaul (following the recent revamps by Causeway and Cadweb). While it is very informative in some areas – its description of its hosting by Verizon is very detailed, for example – it …

Work Wise UK

According to a Silicon.com article, UK telco BT is backing "Work Wise UK", which aims to increase the number of people benefiting from ‘smarter working’ from 3.1 million to 14 million by 2009. "Work Wise Week", 3-9 May 2006, is intended to promote debate between government, unions and UK businesses on styles of working. BT …

4Projects website down

While browsing the other UK collaboration vendors’ websites, I was unable to access 4Projects’ site. A colleague tells me that it’s been offline at least all afternoon – not a good sign for a business promoting on-demand web-based services.

Autodesk completes Constructware purchase

On Friday 31 March, Autodesk announced that it had completed its $46 million acquisition of on-demand software vendor Constructware. The latter’s website promptly disappeared and you are now redirected to pages about Autodesk Constructware – sorry, make that "Autodesk® Constructware®" as ‘Constructware’ is now another registered trademark of Autodesk Inc. Among a fairly comprehensive re-branding, …

Cyril Sweett on BIW

In January (see Rok set on in-house capability), I commented on Contract Journal’s regular insight into AEC company’s IT practices. This month’s subject is construction consultancy Cyril Sweett (13 offices and 550 staff in the UK; 52 and 1500 globally). On the collaboration question, IT director John Hadji-Michael responded: "The project collaboration tools we make …

“On-demand vendors: do as I say, not as I do”

Phil Wainewright’s lastest post points out an irony in the offerings of many Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers: "… many of the leading names operate their own data centers. This seems somewhat illogical, if not downright hypocritical. On the one hand, they ask their customers to rely on a third party to provide mission-critical business applications. But …

The BIM difference

Do you subscribe to the AECbytes.com newsletter? You should (here – and it’s free). Some of the articles are tremendously interesting. The latest is a piece by Autodesk’s Jay Bhatt which, in a few paragraphs, gives a good definition of building information modelling (BIM) and positions it alongside other developments such as 3D modelling.

Last week, it was Microsoft Delays Vista, Again; days later, it’s Office Delayed, Along with Vista. SaaS making headway

Allen Bernard in ASPnews.com, in an article SaaS Making Headway (Again), writes about the growing acceptance of the Software as a Service (SaaS) model as the likes of IBM, Microsoft, SAP and Oracle throw their weight behind the approach. He quotes some high-flying hype from an IBM press release "Pacific Crest predicts the SaaS market …

According to a survey of UK CAD managers undertaken by Evolve Consultancy‘s Nigel Davies (reported at EatYourCAD.com; PDF available here): "Email continues to be the most popular form of issuing digital information at 65.5%. The decrease is due to the resurgence in popularity of project extranets which are now the primary issue format of 13.8% …
