BIM, BIMs or SBIM?

After last week’s Construction Computing Show (see previous post), I have finally got round to reading the show edition of Construction Computing magazine (November/December 2006), which incorporates CAD User. In the latter, there is an article (not yet on the CAD User website) from Mervyn Richards, which I think gives a good, if ultimately somewhat …

BuildOnline and Koral

BuildOnline CEO Mark Suster is running two companies. As well as running the UK-based construction collaboration vendor, Suster is also CEO of California-based Koral. This is an interesting development on two or three levels: first, Koral itself seems an interesting business with a strong Web2.0 content collaboration product; second, I wonder whether this will have an …

“QS News” feature on mobile working

UK trade magazine QS News has published a feature article written by me: Why ‘I’ always comes before ‘T’. In the article, I argue that providers and users of mobile IT solutions in the construction industry need to focus on ‘whole life information‘ instead of getting hung-up about technology hardware and connectivity issues. The key …

CE Avanti – ICT or not ICT?

The Avanti initiative is now part of the portfolio of initiatives managed by Constructing Excellence. The branding is a bit confusing. On the one hand, the logo subheading says "ICT-enabled collaborative working", leading one to think that there is some technological foundation, but the latest glossy brochure I have (distributed at a Building & Estates …

BIM – some background reading

Are all your construction contacts clamouring to switch to BIM (building information modelling)? No. Neither are mine. However, there is certainly growing interest in what BIM might have to offer, and over the last few days I have found myself reading more about it. For example: On AEC Cadalyst, I read a great article by US-based …

SaaS penetration to reach 25% by 2011

ASPnews.com reports the latest projections for Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) growth from Gartner, who say SaaS will constitute 25 percent of new business software delivered by 2011, compared to just five percent in 2005. The trend is upward, says Gartner, because: SaaS is beginning to solve business complexity problems. SaaS is more affordable from operating budgets whereas …

Knowledge – an untapped resource

Inbetween the PIECC event on Tuesday and yesterday’s Constructing Excellence event, I attended a seminar at the RICS organised by an Oxford Brookes University team, led by Esra Kurun, presenting a study of social networks and their role in knowledge management. It was interesting stuff. There were two case studies, the first from Bovis Lend Lease …

Give PIECC a chance

Yesterday I attended a workshop at Loughborough University to discuss Planning and Implementation of Effective Collaboration in Construction, the PIECC (pronounced ‘peace’) project. The event was one of the final deliverables of a two-year, EPSRC-funded project run by Loughborough’s Mark Shelbourn and Dino Bouchlaghem (with industry involvement from Avanti, Arup, Buro Happold, Capita Symonds, Mott …

A co-ordinated approach to construction IT in the UK

Back in February (Long overdue CICA changes), I touched briefly on the need for there to be a more coordinated approach to managing IT interests in the UK construction industry. I suggested there was a potentially confusing array of organisations – the CICA, the IT Construction Forum and Construct IT for Business – representing general …
