About a month ago, I received a copy of the first issue of Green I.T. magazine, a new publication from the publishers of Construction Computing (the latest to target sustainability issues in the business world – see my Think 08 post). The magazine is being "distributed every quarter to 70,000 IT professionals", but I've now …

Microsoft SaaS strategy “a work in progress”
According to the latest assessment from Springboard Research, the strategy of 'Software plus services' being pursued by Microsoft is still "a work in progress". Drawing on insights gained at the Microsoft's Asia Pacific Analyst Summit last month (when it announced Windows Live and Microsoft Online – see post), Springboard says it expects "Microsoft to struggle …

Egan: 10 years on (again)
It seems hardly a week goes by at the moment without someone talking about what has (or – more likely – hasn't) changed in the UK construction industry in the ten years since Sir John Egan produced his report, Rethinking Construction. A couple of weeks ago, Building magazine produced a depressing feature, “Egan 10 years …

Test Windows Live Writer
After noticing some issues with how my posts from an 18-month-old version of Live Writer to TypePad were being handled (titles not appearing, and selected categories being rendered as sequences of numbers), I am trying to narrow down the causes. I suspect it’s been caused by updates at TypePad (my Flock editor get similar results), …

3D anyone?
Interested in 3D? My friend Martin Brown (iSite) will be participating in 3DCamp, an event in Limerick this weekend: "a themed Barcamp which will focus on virtual worlds (Second Life, the Metaverse), mirror worlds (Google Earth and Virtual Earth), mapping mashups, GPS, Location based Services (LBSs), haptics (eg. Wiimote hacks), 3D modelling (Blender, Sketchup) and …

CTSpace website taking shape
As mentioned last week, the new CTSpace website is taking shape, adopting the ‘look and feel’ of the parent Sword Group website, and with a new CTSpace logo incorporating the words “A Sword Group Company”. It’s a good-looking site – I like the animated photographs on the home page. CTSpace claims 135,000 users (though this …

Testing Flock blog tool
For some months, I have been a happy user of Microsoft’s Live Writer as an offline blogging tool and have been using the Flock browser. Now – and partly because fellow blogger Phil Clark at ZeroChampion has become a Flock user – I have started investigating how well Flock’s built-in editing tool works with my …

Tender points
Reading the latest construction weeklies, Construction News has a column (not yet online) from Neil Jarrett of the Collaborative Working Centre explaining how collaborative working will address the problem of bid-rigging, advocating open book cost management (to give greater visibility of real costs and make it difficult for contractors to benefit from collusion) and frameworks (to …

CTSpace website to launch shortly?
Changes afoot regarding the long overdue CTSpace website (see previous posts here and here), though the work doesn’t yet appear to be complete (some pages appear just to be text-dumps from the old site; many don’t have a CTSpace URL – just an IP address). Expect the new Sword-style site to be relaunched shortly.
