A survey of over 270 small/medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by EasyNet Connect (see PDF) shows that, while many are ready to embrace Software-as-a-Service, they are often ignoring connectivity and security issues: One in four respondents plan to move to cloud-based services or applications within two years, with around half (47%) expected to do so within five …

Business needs more SaaS
Last night I attended a meeting combining the North London branch of the British Computer Society and London Wiki Wednesday, during which there was some discussion of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) (I also talked about Be2camp). By coincidence, I have just come across a news item on the BCS website, Business needs more SaaS, outlining findings from …

Asite teams up with OpSource
A news release today from US-based web hosting business OpSource says it has agreed a strategic partnership with UK collaboration services provider Asite Solutions. Ignoring the hyperbole,* it appears OpSource On-Demand will now provide Asite’s hosting regime (OpSource has data centres in Virginia, London and Bangalore – London-based Asite also has an office in India). …

CADaaS again
My discussions earlier this year about whether CAD solutions might be delivered as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications (see CADaaS continued, for example), are being echoed by other bloggers. The latest to consider the Future of CAD and cloud computing is Lou Gallo on the Solidworks: Heard blog. Update (12 August 2008): Even one of Autodesk’s resident …

Autodesk has just announced the launch of a new Autodesk Buzzsaw data centre in Hong Kong, to support customers of its construction collaboration solution across the Asia Pacific region, having spent three years on the selection process (see news release). The process was facilitated by inward investment agency InvestHK whose Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion, …

Greener Than Thou
CAD Insider Roopinder Tara attended last week’s Bentley bonanza in Baltimore (see my post) and, in a post Greener than Thou, has been wondering about how green a CAD company can be when, after all, its design software will be used to create edifices consuming large amounts of natural resources. Bentley’s Joe Croser told him …

Incite – update
Two months ago (INCITE = ThinkProject!), I wrote about Australia-based construction collaboration provider Nexus Point and the Incite product. I have just received a helpful email from Sean Kaye, Nexus Point’s managing director, updating me on a few details. First of all, Nexus Point Solutions never had an agreement of any sort with Baulogis; the minority …

Getting Won Over
There is a good case study on the use of ‘extranet’ technologies (aka construction collaboration technologies) in the latest issue of UK industry weekly Building magazine. Getting Won Over, by Stephen Kennett, details the experiences of UK-based property developer Hammerson, supported by Gleeds Collaboration Services, in using the collaboration platform from BIW Technologies [my employer]. Hammerson’s previous …

More on Web 2.0
Just a few days after I wrote about Web 2.0 and a Parity white paper, Cisco has just released a study on the use of video and Web 2.0 technology in businesses worldwide (see also ebiz story). The survey, of 850 corporate IT decision-makers, revealed that, as consumer adoption has grown, so companies have begun to embrace …

Delivering my first webinars
The flow of posts to this blog slowed slightly this week as I spent time preparing for, and then delivering two webinars for BIW Technologies [my employer]. The first of these online seminars related to use of online collaboration platforms to manage construction contract processes – particularly those associated with the New Engineering Contract (NEC); …
