Here, at long last, are my final two predictions for 2008 (see numbers one, two and three). 4. Recession to have impact upon the collaboration technology market With gloomy economic predictions almost daily at the moment, it is pretty safe to predict that any UK recession will have impacts upon the construction collaboration technology market, …

IBM targets SME collaboration with SaaS Bluehouse
A few years ago, my young children would rise at unfeasibly early hours of the day and watch kids TV, including a programme called Bear in the Big Blue House. I was reminded of this when reading news of a new offering from IBM: a web-delivered service that provides extranet services to SMEs (aka SMBs) …

More SharePoint for AEC
Earlier this week, a Microsoft employee frankly admitted to me that SharePoint was not particularly easy to implement for extranet-type collaboration in the typical geographically distributed structure of a construction project team. As a result, Microsoft has tended to be reliant upon partners such as the Sword Group’s C2Share (see post) to expand its SharePoint footprint in …

ShareWorkz: intranet and extranet collaboration
I, and several of my colleagues, have received emails from Microsoft VAR ICS Solutions about ShareWorkz, described as “a functionally rich, best practice intranet and extranet collaboration platform, based on Microsoft SharePoint technology, that enables you to build a collaboration solution in less than one hour”. While it describes itself as “a world first”, I guess …

BT Workspace
Almost unnoticed, UK telecoms provider BT has recently launched a web-based service, BT Workspace, aimed at helping people in small to medium-sized enterprises share information and collaborate with each other. It talks about getting rid of email clutter, and managing and controlling projects via extranet functionality, with intranet functionality also available for internal company dicussions …

Microsoft Vista support for Autodesk DWF format (2)
I wrote 10 days ago on this topic, and Ralph Grabowski has also been watching developments. In his latest article on the topic, About DWFx, he talks about the limitations, and links to an article, Does Vista really open DWFs?, on another interesting blog, Owen Wengerd’s Outside the Box (Owen’s lates post concerns The secret world …

Bentley ProjectWise StartPoint extends SharePoint functionality
In May and October, I noted developments relating to Bentley’s entry-level collaboration system, ProjectWise StartPoint. The latest release from Bentley (see AECcafe.com), says that StartPoint will now connect to and extend new capabilities in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Microsoft Vista support for Autodesk DWF format
Autodesk has announced a collaboration with Microsoft to integrate DWF technology with the Windows Vista operating system (released to business customers today – see BBC news story). Vista users will be able to view and manage DWFs without additional downloads of plug-ins or special viewing software. Viewers are a feature of all construction collaboration technologies, or …

Cimmetry AutoVue for SharePoint 2003
Not everyone needs the full-blown collaborative capacity of a construction collaboration platform (aka ‘extranet’) to share and collaborate upon design drawings. Particularly when working within organisations, teams can share drawings using a simple Microsoft SharePoint solution, and Cimmetry has just released a version of its AutoVue viewer product for just such an environment. Read the …
