de Kieviet thinks SharePoint is the future

To paraphrase Mandy Rice-Davies, Well, he would, wouldn’t he! Following my recent blog post about his move to Netherlands-based SharePoint reseller Cadac Organice, Gert-Jan de Kieviet (right) talked to me about his move from Sword-CTSpace and his somewhat controversial view that Microsoft SharePoint is the future of construction collaboration. BuildOnline and CTSpace In the mid-2000s, …

BuildOnline’s UK downward drift

Partly out of historical interest, I continue to monitor the company reporting of BuildOnline, a construction collaboration technology vendor which is now part of the French-owned Sword Group, today trading as Sword CTSpace and offering a portfolio of products from former offerings BuildOnline, Citadon and, more recently, Cimage. BuildOnline (UK) Ltd’s Annual Report and Accounts …

I HATE LOSING!

UK construction collaboration technology vendors with long(ish) memories will recall the surge in interest by the major UK water utility companies in using web-based systems to support their Asset Management Programmes (AMPs) during the early 2000s. Former BuildOnline boss Mark Suster, now a venture capitalist in California, tells the story of a defeat clutched from …

Investing in a dot.com/SaaS business: a history

In the late 1990s and into the first year or so of the 21st century, the dot.com boom say billions invested in new online ventures across great swathes of industry and commerce. The global architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry was no different. Millions were pumped into new start-ups by venture capitalists, business angels and …

BuildOnline revisited

In the absence of any updates regarding Sword Group and its recently-acquired construction collaboration technology business still branded as CTSpace (formerly known as BuildOnline and Citadon, formerly known as Cephren (formerly known as BlueLineOnline and E-bricks) and Bidcom, which also incorporated Cubus – and that’s just the short version!) or even a new website (see post), …

Suster leaves Salesforce.com

Mark Suster, one-time CEO of UK construction collaboration vendor BuildOnline (now CTSpace) has apparently left on-demand CRM business Salesforce.com, only four months after it acquired his Koral business (see post). I’ve seen it rumoured (Twitter) that Mark has joined a venture capital firm in Los Angeles. Tweet

BuildOnline investors nurse losses

Ireland’s Sunday Business Post has reported that “early investors in early investors in Dublin online firm BuildOnline are nursing losses after the firm merged with a US company”. Founded in Ireland, BuildOnline quickly relocated to London during the dot.com boom, and – positioning itself, first, as an e-construction marketplace, then, a provider of construction collaboration technologies …

Salesforce.com acquires Koral

In November and December 2006, I was talking about Koral, a content collaboration business set up by Mark Suster (former CEO of UK construction collaboration technology vendor BuildOnline) and two BO colleagues. Today, the Koral blog says Koral has been acquired by Salesforce.com – adding: “Our entire [nine-strong] team has joined salesforce.com to lead the content management …

Open source v On-demand

While Mark Suster is no longer involved in the day-to-day running of a construction collaboration business, he is still a strong believer in Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Having taken up a non-executive role with CTSpace (see BuildOnline + Citadon = CTSpace) in order to devote his time to running Koral (which has apparently raised $4m funding), Mark’s …

CTSpace dissected

Yesterday’s announcement of a merger of BuildOnline and Citadon to form CTSpace (see earlier post) presents a positive view of the past history of the two firms, so it is worth analysing some of the background. Let’s start with BuildOnline. BuildOnline backstory BuildOnline was actually originally founded in Ireland and set out to become an e-marketplace …
