Top 10 Construction IT trends

This is the original draft of an article I wrote that has just been published in the March 2010 issue of Construction Manager magazine (link to digital edition), alongside a bigger feature looking at the new generation of construction collaboration platforms (including Woobius, Collabor8online and SliderStudio‘s StickyWorld – all of which I’ve recently talked about …

The internet as a lifeline for AEC SMEs

(This is a slightly updated version of a post from my pwcom2.0 blog that discusses potential use of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), among other tactics, for managing the impact of the recession upon SMEs in the AEC sector.) Given that most of the businesses active in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sectors are small or medium-sized …

Out of the blue: LotusLive

About a year ago, I wrote a short post about IBM’s prototype Bluehouse product (see IBM targets SME collaboration with SaaS Bluehouse). Today at Public Service Events‘ Construction Project Management ’09 conference at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, I had chance to get a quick update on latest iteration of that product from the team …

Building webinar experience

I sat through a webinar hosted by UK trade magazine, Building, earlier today. Entitled Improving Business Efficiency in a Tough Economic Environment, it featured a presentation by Steve Masters of BT, and was chaired by Ray Crotty of C3 Systems (formerly of Bovis). Reflecting Steve’s role at a telecoms giant, most of his talk was …

Aconex gets private equity injection

The Australian business press (eg: Melbourne’s The Age, Australian IT, MIS Australia, Smart Company Briefing) has been busy reporting news that Australia-based SaaS-based construction collaboration technology vendor Aconex has secured a AU$107.5m (£48.8m) private equity investment (see also Aconex news release and listen to ZDnet Australia podcast). Not since the reckless days of the dot.com …

Asia Pacific SaaS market

Springboard Research has provided me with some useful background on the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) market in Asia and the Pacific Rim in the past (see here and here, for example). News of its latest research was published last week. It says: Local ISVs and smaller global vendors offering Software-as-a-Service solutions have captured an estimated 54% …

Why buy the cow?

Why Buy the Cow? is a book by Subrah Iyar, co-founder and general manager of WebEx, that sets out to explain the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) movement and Web 2.0. The title refers to an analogy used to describe the new generation of software vendors who, in effect, sell milk instead of forcing customers to buy cows to milk themselves. …

Web conferencing and sustainability

Two-and-a-half years ago, when I was putting the finishing touches to the final chapter of my book manuscript, I sketched out ideas of how web-based conferencing solutions might be used to replace some face-to-face meetings in construction projects. At the time, I focused on the convenience aspect of such ‘net meetings’ and their value alongside …
